So, you’ve got your Diploma and SPS – well done! What next?

 

Gaining the relevant qualifications is the first step to becoming a Financial Consultant, but finding a position that enables you to develop into the finished article isn’t always easy.

So, you won’t be thrown in the deep end with an arbitrary sales target and no clients to talk to!

 

You will be working closely with our existing Consultancy Team and actively involved in live cases from day 1. In addition to providing independent financial advice, you will be able to offer clients our in house asset management solution, Butler Toll Asset Management (btam), which is managed by our highly experienced investment team.

We will help you to develop your skills as a financial adviser in terms of the advice process, networking and building a portfolio of clients.

 

As part of your personal development, we will support you as you work towards Chartered status and beyond.

James’s Story

 

“I joined Butler Toll a little over 2 years ago.

 

I had passed my Diploma and obtained my SPS with a previous firm, but the opportunities for developing my skills were limited. I was pretty much given a target and some ‘legacy’ clients and told to get on with it; pretty much ‘sink or swim’ to be honest.

 

I joined Butler Toll because their approach was refreshingly different; I spent the first year working with the Directors and Consultants on developing opportunities and preparing cases. There was no question of a ‘sales target’; instead the emphasis was on providing clients with a first class service and developing my knowledge and skills.

I was involved in client work from day 1, which was a massive learning curve for me because many of the cases I worked on were complex financial planning scenarios.

 

I was also encouraged to study for my Chartered qualifications, in conjunction with learning on the job.

 

Once I completed my initial training and probationary period, I was allocated clients to look after in my own right, and since then I have steadily built a portfolio of clients through referrals and networking activities.

 

Two years on, and after a lot of hard work, I am waiting for that final exam result to become a fully-fledged Chartered Financial Planner. I am now responsible for a portfolio of around £35m of assets under management, and looking forward to building on this in the future.
